On October 21, 2021, production on the independent Western film Rust was underway at the iconic Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico. The cast and crew had gathered inside a small, rustic wooden church structure to rehearse an upcoming shootout scene. Alec Baldwin, starring as the grizzled outlaw Harland Rust and serving as a key producer on the project, was practicing a quick-draw maneuver with an antique-style Pietta .45 Colt revolver.
Believing the firearm was completely “cold”—a universal industry term strictly indicating that a weapon contains no live ammunition or dangerous primers—Baldwin drew the revolver and pointed it toward the camera lens, where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza were aligning the shot frame. Without warning, a deafening blast echoed through the enclosed space. A real, live lead bullet tore through the firearm’s cylinder, striking Hutchins squarely in the chest before exiting her body and embedding itself in Souza’s shoulder.
Screams erupted as smoke and panic filled the room. Crew members rushed to apply pressure to Hutchins’ wounds while emergency medical responders raced to the scene. Hutchins was frantically airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she was tragically pronounced dead. Souza survived his physical injuries, but the emotional trauma of that fateful afternoon left permanent scars on everyone present.
