Baby born with an DIU peg… See

In northern Vietnam, at Hai Phong International Hospital, what began as a routine delivery soon became a story that spread across continents. A healthy newborn entered the world not only to the joy of his mother and doctors but also clutching something highly unusual in his tiny hand—an intrauterine device (IUD), the very form of birth control his mother had chosen years earlier to prevent pregnancy.

The image of the baby holding the small, T-shaped contraceptive device traveled across social media almost instantly. While some saw humor, others marveled at fate, and medical professionals used the case as an opportunity to explain the science—and limitations—of contraception. What could have been dismissed as a curious medical anomaly instead became a story of irony, resilience, and wonder.

This article explores the background, the science behind IUDs, cultural reactions, and the broader lessons this story carries for families, health professionals, and societies worldwide.

The Unforgettable Moment

The obstetrician on duty, Dr. Tran Viet Phuong, described the delivery as straightforward from a medical standpoint. Both mother and child were stable and healthy. What made the birth extraordinary was the sight of the baby emerging with the contraceptive device in his grasp.

Dr. Phuong later explained to local media that she had found the situation “interesting rather than alarming.” Out of curiosity and perhaps instinct, she took a photo of the newborn holding the IUD. What she did not anticipate was that this snapshot would go viral within hours, sparking conversation across the globe.

The baby’s mother, a 34-year-old woman, had chosen the IUD after the birth of her second child. It was meant to provide long-term contraception, but doctors later concluded that the device had shifted from its original placement in the uterus. This shift allowed pregnancy to occur despite the method’s otherwise high effectiveness rate.

A Mother’s Experience

For the mother, the pregnancy came as a surprise, but she accepted it with grace. She preferred to remain anonymous when the story was reported, focusing instead on her child’s safe arrival.

Her son was born weighing 3.2 kilograms—around seven pounds—and did not require any special medical care. Despite the IUD’s presence throughout her pregnancy, no complications developed, making the outcome an exceptionally fortunate one.

While most discussions around contraception focus on reliability and risk management, this case reminded many people worldwide that no method offers absolute certainty.
